For a city example, RaD New Plymouth lists a depot at 592 Devon Street East, Fitzroy. Its airport service uses a parked vehicle and a lockbox rather than requiring collection from that city depot. Arrange the service in advance and keep the location and access instructions available when you arrive.
Compare the journey to the car, not just the daily rate. Include any transfer, delivery or out-of-hours charge in your decision. If your accommodation is your starting point, a depot can be practical; if you are arriving by air, confirm the exact airport collection procedure.
A late arrival changes the comparison
Airport opening hours do not guarantee that a particular rental desk or handover service is available. RaD's branch page, for example, describes Sunday, public-holiday and after-hours service as by arrangement. Treat that as a request to confirm your booking's eligibility, not a promise of round-the-clock collection.
Before paying, check who to contact if your arrival changes, how long the reservation will be held and whether a missed collection becomes a no-show. Allow time for baggage and the handover itself when selecting a pickup time.
A Taranaki day trip needs a parking plan
For a visit to North Egmont, the useful question is how you will reach the walk you have chosen. DOC's North Taranaki Visitor Centre page identifies the visitor centre at the Egmont Road end. At our 9 September 2026 check, DOC warned of limited parking until December 2026 during construction, with the centre operating from a temporary building in the upper car park.
Compare driving there with a confirmed shuttle for your date; DOC recommends carpooling or a shuttle while the works affect parking. If you drive, allow flexibility for the roadworks and avoid making your rental return depend on finding a space immediately. If you use a shuttle, settle the return collection and its compatibility with your chosen walk.
North Egmont and Dawson Falls are different starting points. Select the actual road end for the activity you plan, then check DOC's current access information. In winter, DOC advises checking conditions before the drive up Egmont Road because it can be icy. Rental-road permission and the day's conditions both matter.
