Choose a Puerto Montt rental by where you will start and which part of Los Lagos you intend to explore. El Tepual Airport, a city-labelled depot and accommodation in Puerto Varas are different collection contexts. For Chiloe or the Carretera Austral, resolve ferry and road requirements before choosing a vehicle.
A city branch may not be beside your hotel
Budget Chile's Puerto Montt branch page lists El Tepual Airport and a separate city location at kilometre 3 of Route 226, Centro Empresarial HUSAMONTT, units 1 and 2. At our check, the city schedule was Monday to Friday with weekends closed; airport hours related to commercial-flight arrivals.
A branch labelled Ciudad is a specific depot, not a promise of waterfront collection, hotel delivery or airport handover. Check its address against your accommodation and include the transfer. Weekend collection needs particular attention to the opening window.
| Starting plan | Option to compare | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Flight into El Tepual | Airport collection | Arrival arrangement and delay contact |
| Already in Puerto Montt | A named city depot | Address, opening day and transport to the branch |
| Puerto Varas stay before touring | Transfer followed by shorter hire | Where collection and return actually happen |
| Ferry or longer road trip | A vehicle approved for the route | Ferry carriage, surfaces and return branch |
These examples establish local options to investigate, not guaranteed supplier availability in comparison results.

El Tepual Airport's transport page lists buses to the Puerto Montt bus terminal and shared transfers serving Puerto Varas and addresses in the two cities. Confirm the departure arrangement, luggage provision and current fare for your arrival; published daytime and overnight arrangements differ.
If your first days centre on accommodation and organised activities, compare transfers plus selected-day hire against a full-stay rental. Include the journey back to the depot or airport. A transfer to Puerto Varas does not put you beside a Puerto Montt rental office the following morning.
Plan the lakes and island journeys separately
List the places you intend to visit before deciding the rental duration. Returning to one accommodation each night is a different plan from changing hotels with all your luggage. Check parking with your accommodation and use the offered category's luggage specification rather than its example photograph.
Chile's official Chiloe visitor guide describes the approach from the Puerto Montt area to Pargua and the ferry crossing to the island. Before including it, confirm rental-company permission for the vehicle aboard the intended service. Allow for boarding and a flexible return buffer. A ferry route on a tourism map does not establish permission under your rental agreement.
For the Carretera Austral, Chile Travel identifies Puerto Montt as the northern starting point and describes gravel sections, variable weather and ferry connections. Read the guidance for the sections you plan to travel. Ask about those named roads and ferry legs, and confirm the intended return branch. A general Puerto Montt reservation does not answer those questions.
Keep pickup and return practical
The airport rental directory links to operators and commonly relates their opening to flight operations. This is useful orientation, not a promise of a personal handover whenever a delayed flight arrives. Obtain the procedure and contact on your own confirmation.
Save the return address and ask how keys and inspection are handled at the booked time. Include a fuel stop and transport from the depot if the rental does not end at the airport. A branch closed over the weekend needs an accepted return arrangement, not an assumed key box.
Compare mandatory charges, kilometre allowance, extras and cancellation terms. Keep the deposit separate from rental cost: both matter to the funds you need, but they are different items. Enter a one-way return when searching rather than planning to negotiate it at collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is city collection the same as El Tepual Airport?
No. Budget publishes separate airport and city locations with different opening arrangements. Check the full address and branch on your offer before arranging transport.
Can I collect a city car at the weekend?
Check the selected branch. Budget's city schedule was weekday-only at our check. That does not establish every operator's hours or an individually agreed arrangement; confirm your particular date.
Can I take the rental to Chiloe?
Confirm ferry permission and the itinerary with the rental company before booking. The official visitor route includes the crossing from Pargua, but not every vehicle or contract necessarily permits it.
Does the Carretera Austral need a different vehicle?
Its official guidance identifies gravel, variable weather and ferries. Give the rental company your actual route and ask which vehicle and conditions apply. An SUV category alone does not settle suitability or permission.
How should I compare prices?
Use the same dates, driver and branch pair, then add transfers and relevant ferry costs. Compare the complete mandatory rental price and terms; no current cheapest supplier or daily rate is verified here.

Use two quotes for the same dates and vehicle needs. Add the costs of getting to the car and the extras you need to see how the totals compare.
Enter your own amounts. Changing currency does not convert them. Blank additional costs count as zero; an unknown deposit stays unknown. Count each charge once.
