Decide which parts of your El Calafate trip need a car before choosing the rental period. Collecting at the airport can make sense when you want independent driving from the first day. A transfer into town followed by selected rental days may fit a stay built around organised excursions or time in El Calafate itself.

The airport has both rental businesses and transfer operators in its arrivals area. You can therefore compare two practical plans: collect a reserved car after landing, or continue to your accommodation and start driving later. Include the full itinerary, the collection window and your return flight in that decision.

Which airport and where are the counters?

El Calafate Airport is also called Aeropuerto Internacional Comandante Armando Tola, with airport code FTE. Check that identity on your reservation when comparing airport collection with a town location.

Match collection to the branch window

SIXT's El Calafate Airport page publishes 07:00-20:00 every day, including holidays. Those hours were checked on 10 September 2026. Confirm the times for your reservation, and allow for baggage collection before the handover you request.

A scheduled landing before 20:00 is not the same as reaching the desk before it closes. Give the branch your flight details and ask how it handles a delay. Do not interpret a booking confirmation as an automatic extension of staffed hours unless the supplier has agreed that arrangement.

The airport directory does not provide a shared timetable for all its rental companies. Compare the actual pickup conditions for each offer. If a late handover is uncertain, an arranged transfer and a later rental can be a more workable plan than depending on an unconfirmed airport collection.

Arrivals transfers are a genuine alternative

The same official services page lists VES Patagonia Airport Shuttle for a bus to El Calafate and Condor Taxi for taxis. It also identifies Chalten Travel and TAQSA-MARGA for bus or excursion services. A listing does not establish that a departure connects with your flight, so confirm the exact destination, timetable and meeting instructions with the operator.

For a town transfer, ask whether the service reaches your accommodation or a central stop, how luggage is handled and what happens if the flight is delayed. For onward travel, confirm that the actual service starts at the airport rather than a town terminal. These details can change the value of deferring the rental.

Do not assume that the shortest rental is cheapest. Compare the total quotes and all additional journeys. A town pickup can save unused hire days yet add a collection trip; airport pickup can avoid that trip but include days when the car stays parked.

Plan the glacier day separately from airport arrival

Argentina's official tourism itinerary for Los Glaciares places Perito Moreno Glacier 80 kilometres from El Calafate's city centre. That is a town-to-attraction distance, not the distance from the airport. Keep the airport transfer and the glacier excursion as separate legs when planning your day.

If that excursion is the main reason you want a car, compare a dedicated rental day with the complete arrangements of a tour or transfer you are considering. Include the point where the activity starts, return arrangements and any admission or activity booking. Vehicle hire does not itself confirm entry or an excursion reservation.

For a longer itinerary, give the rental company the actual destinations and final accommodation approaches. Ask separately about vehicle suitability, permitted roads, any proposed border crossing and a return to another branch. A large vehicle or an airport booking does not settle those questions.

Return arrangements and official orientation

Before leaving the collection desk, establish the return parking, key handover, fuel arrangement and contact procedure. Neither the airport's counter directory nor the quoted SIXT opening window proves a 24-hour return box. Confirm an early or late return with your own branch before relying on it.

Use the airport's services page for business names and arrivals-sector orientation. A current official passenger-terminal map was not verified for this guide, so it does not give an invented route between numbered counters. Your airline's check-in deadline and the vehicle-return appointment are separate parts of the departure plan.
